My gaming began with Nintendo. My younger self enjoyed Super Mario Bros, Kung Fu, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out and those were only the beginning. The games were much simpler then, but my enjoyment of them were no less than any of today’s AAA titles.
Today, the console’s hardware is more advanced along with the software that runs on them. With everything faster and prettier, why do I continue to look back at my childhood as the best time in video gaming? Nostalgia. For any gamer who’s enjoyed the medium for any amount of period, the initial excitement will soon surface. [more here]
I eventually outgrew Nintendo. My elitist gaming mind thought that their characters and their games were no longer good enough for me. I soon sold my Nintendo 64 (which I now regret) and purchased a Playstation. Those days were fun, too. I was introduced to Resident Evil and Tomb Raider. Later, the XBox was released and I was a new owner on Christmas Day. Halo was the game to get and I had the privilege of playing the game non-stop for several days until [cont.]
For the next several years, the XBOX360 was my console of choice. Of course, I eventually purchased a Playstation 3 and a Wii, but the XBOX360 is what I played. There’s been some good franchises introduced, but I had a problem. I was already introduced to Mario, Luigi, Link, and the rest of Nintendo’s cast. No matter how much I enjoyed the newer franchises, they simply were not my first.
Nintendo is nostalgia updated. I completely missed the GameCube generation and my Wii seldom got any playtime. As the fourth iteration of Call of Duty and Halo released, I began to grow tired of gaming. I couldn’t pinpoint any single reason. Maybe it was the online community. Perhaps I felt the FPS genre is growing stale. Regardless, I remember my younger years and the enjoyment I had with Nintendo.
As a cure to nostalgia woes, I began playing Zelda, New Super Mario Bros, and Metroid. Obviously, they’re nothing like the originals but the recognition of the characters and my attachment to them helped purify my nostalgia.
Nintendo is the cornerstone of my gaming world.
They’ve received ridicule for their franchises with claims to no longer innovating. It’s been said that they forgot how and all new games from Nintendo are sequels or re-releases. Whether it holds validity or not, may depend on the gamer. Yes, there’s Mario and Zelda games and as long as the big N is in business, they’ll continue to make their games.http://www.lansingmarketinggroup.com/blog/bid/222751/Why-Nostalgia-WORKS http://dispatches.cheatcc.com/dispatches/231?utm_source=zergnet.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=zergnet_52627#.UcSqCkCKL44
